Making the Move to Senior Living: Tips for Downsizing and Transitioning
Moving into a senior living community is a significant life change, whether for yourself or a loved one. Between downsizing, planning the move, and adjusting to a new environment, the process can feel overwhelming and emotional. This blog aims to simplify the process by providing practical tips to help start the planning process, create strategies, and foster a positive experience.
Is it time to transition into senior living?
It’s often difficult for families to start the conversation of when the right time for their loved one to navigate to senior living. There are many signs and factors to consider when encouraging a loved one to transition into a senior living community.
-
Is safety a concern?
-
Is upkeep a concern?
-
Is their current property too big?
-
Could downsizing put them in a better location (closer to family)?
-
Will moving be more difficult in the future?
As much as we would appreciate our loved ones staying comfortable in their own home, keeping them safe and healthy is a top priority. Depending on the layout of their home, mobility and ease of navigation around the home (stairs, winter weather concerns, lack of accessibility for walkers, etc.) can become a critical issue. Maintaining the interior cleaning or exterior landscaping can become a burden or expensive to hire out.
Moving out of your current home is a difficult decision, especially when years of memories were created in that space. It’s important to approach the conversation with your loved one about downsizing or moving into senior living delicately and provide space for them to think about the decision. Start Early and Prepare a Plan for the Transition
The biggest gift you can give yourself and your loved one is starting these conversations early so they have time to think about the decision and process and for you, so that sudden decisions aren’t having to be made. Additionally, homes hold many memories… and items. Sorting through years and years of belongings will take time. Setting goals and a timeline will help keep the process moving and make the task feel less rushed or overwhelming for them. If your loved one has the ability to help with the process, create a list or spreadsheet to help them make decisions and keep organized.
Organize Your Belongings and Create Systems
Naturally you will be sorting, organizing, donating, and throwing away a lot of items. Staying organized and having a system of where items are going (Goodwill, garage sale, family members) will help create a seamless transition. Helping encourage your loved one to donate, sell, and discard unnecessary items will make the downsizing process much easier – keeping in mind that their items are important to them, and maintaining memories for their new space will be special to hold onto.
Keep Their Space Personal
Like previously mentioned, maintaining sentimental items and a sense of personalization to their space will make it feel like home. Hanging photos, packing picture books, sentimental memorabilia, comforting bedding or blankets all help the transition process. Equally as important, create digital copies of legal papers and documents, keep valuable jewelry or other important items in a secure location, and have an accessible shared folder for all medical records for the family.
